Cupping Massage

Cupping Massage – Ancient Healing Method with a Modern Touch

Cupping Therapy is a modern method of using an ancient form of  Chinese medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. This can have a many healing benefits on the body including relief of:

  • Back/ neck pain
  • Muscle stiffnesscupping warehouse
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Migraines
  • Rheumatism
  • Cellulite

How does cupping work?

Well lets first talk about Massage Therapy. If you have had a therapeutic massage before, we know it’s the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body.

What are the soft tissues?

  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Nerves
  • Fascia

When a therapist gives the massage, they are usually pushing into the body, using different strokes to loosen up tight muscles and fascia, break up adhesions, etc.  Cupping can enhance the massage session, or be a treatment on its own. It works a little differently however, by creating a negative pressure, or suction when applied to the skin.

By creating a vacuum effect, cupping has been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, which is used to treat muscle pain and spasms, drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions, connective tissue and stubborn knots in soft tissue, relax the nervous system, stimulate blood circulation and bring blood flow to nourish stagnant muscles and skin, enhance the flow of energy, stimulate lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear the arteries, veins, and capillaries, and improve varicose veins. Cupping draws the inflammation out, yet does not add to it.

How Knots form in the muscles:

  • Muscle fibers stick together and contract due to stress or trauma
  • Blood flow is restricted
  • Metabolic waste builds up
  • Pain and spasms occur
  • Movement is restricted

Let’s talk a little bit about what happens when cupping massage is performed on the body. Here is a visual of how our body is composed of many layers. What happens when these layers become “compressed”, many times due to stress, injury, diet, poor posture or a combination of the above?

Layers of tissue

Stagnation, nothing can flow properly. Blood flow is compromised, our lymphatic system gets backed up like a sewage system and toxins begin to accumulate. Nerves become impinged by the hardened surrounding tissue as there is no fresh blood supply or nourishment circulating through that region. This also causes stagnation of chi, or our “life force energy”.

What are the common signs toxic build up in our tissues?

  • Inflammation/heatback pain
  • Pain
  • Lumpy or “jelly” like feeling on the region(s)
  • Swelling
  • Digestive issues
  • Skin problems
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Cellulite
  • Spasms/cramping
  • Fatigue

How can Cupping Massage help?

First, it incorporates massage, aromatic oils, and is painless yet has a powerful effect. The movement of the cups allows massage and cupping to be combined. By creating a vacuum effect, or negative pressure from the suction,  Cupping releases tight muscles and fascia, increases blood circulation to the body’s tissues, drains out toxins from the lymphatic system and helps remove inflammation from the body.

It helps to “decompress” the layers, as mentioned above. This allows healing to take place as fresh blood supply circulates through the tissues. It will smooth out “knots” or contractors in the muscles and fascia, and soften tight, stiff muscles. This has a powerful pain relieving and detoxifying effect.

Today many health professionals are using cupping to assist them in providing more effective methods for healing and recovery. Now, you can have the tools in the comfort of your own home to do self care for yourself and/or your family.
