Detox Your Body Treatments at Home

Aromatherapy Bathtime

The skin is the largest organ in our body and it is responsible for eliminating toxins from our body through sweat and by shedding dead skin cells on a daily basis. Because we are constantly surrounded by environmental toxins, as well as many others, detoxifying our skin is an important step we don’t want to skip. We learn about the importance of internal detoxification in our article: Detoxify.

Both internal and external detoxification work hand in hand. So,  if you are doing an internal detox, why not try an external detox to enhance results?

As you release toxins internally with your cleanse and by following the Detox menu, the body treatments can assist in the following ways:

  • Increase circulation
  • Stimulate Lymphatic system detoxification
  • Reduce fluid retention
  • Reduce cellulite
  • Tone the skin
  • Clear congested skin

As a Certified Aromatherapist, for me what I put on my skin is important. Natural ingredients such as Pure Essential Oils, natural carrier oils and Sea Salts for example, are crucial for Detox Your Body Treatments.

Below are 3 of my favorite “Detox Your Body” recipes I put together where you can pamper yourself at home and use alone, or at the same time as you do your internal cleanse. The recipes can be use simultaneously throughout the week.

Have fun with them!

The ingredients

  • Epsom Salt – According to the Epsom Salt Council “Epsom salt is made up of naturally occurring minerals magnesium and sulfate, which can help improve health in numerous ways. A lack of magnesium—which helps regulate the activity of more than 300 enzymes in the body—can contribute to high blood pressure, hyperactivity, heart problems and other health issues, doctors warn. Sulfate is essential for many biological processes. It helps to flush toxins and form proteins in joints, brain tissue and mucin proteins.”
  • Bentonite Clay – Clay’s absorb toxins like a sponge. “Bentonite Clay is a very unique substance, formed primarily of Montmorillonite, which is an extremely flat crystal flake, that carries a relatively strong negative ionic charge. The negative charge is compensated for by adsorbing a cation (either Sodium or Calcium) to the interior of the molecule, this is what makes it either Sodium Bentonite or Calcium Bentonite Clay. To put it another way, think of the Montmorillonite crystal flake resembling two pieces of bread, with a strong vacuum pulling the lunch meat in between them, whatever lands there (Sodium or Calcium) determines what kind of sandwich it will be. Now when you activate this clay sandwich it will magnetically grab the junk in your body (heavy metals, toxins, acid, etc.…) and trade them for the “lunch meat” taking the toxins out in your waste. The two different clays although very similar in their inert state (dry), have very different applications when activated (mixed with water).” – The Bulk Herb Store
  • Sea Salt – Rich in over 82 essential trace nutrients including minerals, sea salt has been used for thousands of years for its cleansing and rejuvenating effects. Makes a great addition to your home spa used in baths or for exfoliation.
  • Carrier Oil – Carrier oils are nourishing and moisturizing to the skin. They derive from many sources such as grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, almond, etc. Many are high in essential fatty acids, and antioxidants such as vitamins A and E.
  • Essential Oils – These are essential oils that help specifically with cleansing the body. When you see the abbreviation “EO” we are referring to Essential Oils.
  • Grapefruit – reduces fluid retention, cleansing, toning, detoxifies, decongest skin.
  • Juniper – diuretic, tonic, increases circulation, reduces fluid retention.
  • Balsam Fir – cleansing, opening especially for respiratory system, aids metabolism, warming, cleansing.
  • Lemon – Detoxifier, balances sebum, aids epidermal circulation.
  • Cedar – cleansing, toning, dries oily, blemished skin, skin softener.
  • Rosemary – increases circulation and lymphatic cleansing, reduces circulation, energizing.

Recipe #1 – Cellular Detox Scrub

Mix the dry ingredients well first (Bentonite Clay & Sea Salt), then in a separate bowl mix the carrier oil with essential oils. Put dry mix in a jar and then add oil mix on top. Mix with a small spatula or spoon.

To use: Separate the amount you would need for a body scrub (usually 1-2 tbsps.) to take with you to the shower; this avoids water from getting into jar. After you shower normally, turn off water and scrub your body (avoiding eyes and mucus membranes). Rinse off. This will leave a light film of oil* which is great moisturizer. Pat dry, repeat 1-2 times per week.

  • 3 tbsp. Bentonite Clay
  • 1 cup Sea Salt
  • ½ cup Grape seed Oil
